An Interior Ministry official has confirmed that Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has fled the country to Tajikistan. This information was given by the news agency Reuters (August 15) on Sunday evening.
According to the report, however, the President's Office said that nothing could be said about Ashraf Ghani's movements due to security concerns. Meanwhile, a Taliban spokesman who entered the capital, Kabul, said earlier that the group was investigating Ghani's whereabouts.
Earlier, a Taliban spokesman, Suhail Shaheen, told the BBC that the Taliban would not take revenge on the country's people. Their lives are completely safe. We are the servants of the country and the people.
"We are waiting for a peaceful transfer of power," the spokesman was quoted as saying in a live BBC report on Sunday (August 15). Our leadership instructed the forces to stay at the gates of Kabul and not to enter the city.
