The court sentenced four persons to life imprisonment for kidnapping and murdering a person from Bara Upazila of Pabna. At the same time, each of them has been sentenced to another year in prison without paying a fine of 25 thousand taka. Judge Ahsan Tarek of the District Special Judge's Court gave this order on Tuesday afternoon.
The convicted persons are Sabuj Dafadar (50) of Laghu Nandanpur village of Shailkupa upazila in Jhenaidah, Abul Kalam (48) of Bangram Purbapara village of Khoksha police station in Kushtia, Azad Rahman (48) and Khalil Uddin (50) of the same village. Azad and Abul Kalam were present in the court when the verdict was announced. Later they were sent to jail. The other two are absconding. The name of the person killed in this incident is Abdur Rashid Shikder (50). His house is in Ramnarayanpur village of Bera upazila of the district.
According to the court sources, the convict Sabuj Dafadar used to work as a day labourer. He came from Jhenaidah and took work as a laborer in the house of Abdur Rashid Shikdar. This formula creates a relationship between the two. Based on this relationship, on July 14, 2009, Sabuj took Abdur Rashid to Jhenaidah to send him abroad. A day after that Abdur Rashid was kidnapped and a ransom of five lakh taka was demanded. In this incident, Abdur Rashid's brother-in-law Baher filed a complaint at Mandal Bara police station. Based on the complaint, the police arrested Sabuj and interrogated him, he confessed to the murder and gave a statement. It is said that he was killed and his body was thrown into the Padma river because he refused to pay the ransom money.
Later, as the police could not recover the body of the deceased Abdur Rashid, they filed a case of kidnapping in the name of six people suspected to be involved in the incident. After the long investigation of the case, on January 11, 2010, the charge sheet was given to the court in the name of 6 people. After hearing the testimony of 11 witnesses and after a long hearing, the court sentenced 4 to life imprisonment. As the charges against the other two were not proved, they were released from the case.
In the court, the lawyer of the state side and the special counsel of the district judge's court, Dewan Majnul Haque, said that since the body was not recovered, the kidnapping case was tried according to the instructions of the high court. The plaintiff feels that justice has been served by this judgment. Two of the convicts were present in court when the verdict was announced. Later they were sent to jail.
