The Turkish government has sharply criticized the US State Department's human rights report. This has given a new dimension to the strained relations between the two NATO allies.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday (March 31st) that US data on Turkey's human rights record was "completely baseless". Their allegations are baseless.
The Middle East Eye reports that the US report was released on Tuesday, entitled "Human Rights Practices for the 2020 Century."
The report includes allegations ranging from extrajudicial killings and torture to the imprisonment of thousands of political opponents, including politicians, lawyers, journalists and human rights activists.
The U.S. report also expressed concern about the direct targeting of Fethullah Gulen supporters and suspects linked to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).
In Turkey, Gulen was named as the mastermind of a 2016 coup attempt to overthrow Erdogan. Turkey has listed the PKK and the Gulen movement as terrorist organizations.
U.S. President Joe Biden is a fierce critic of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. In an interview with the New York Times in 2019, the US president called Erdogan a "dictator."
